Dr. Aseem Shukla Division of Urology, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia

Nominated by Dr. Douglas Canning, Chief of the Division of Urology, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia

Dr. Aseem Shukla has devoted his career to caring for children born with major urologic dysfunctions. He’s done that at CHOP and near his parents’ home in Ahmedabad, India.

Shukla, who lives in Bryn Mawr, leads a team of surgeons who travel to Ahmedabad to volunteer their surgical expertise at a free local hospital. They operate on children born with bladder exstrophy—bladders outside the abdomen. Without surgery, these kids spend their lives soaked in urine. They’re shunned and can’t lead normal lives. “These are the poorest of the poor,” Shukla says. “They would otherwise not have this opportunity.”

Over the past eight years, more than 60 kids have had corrective surgery; during each two-week trip, Shukla’s team trains Indian surgeons. His goal is to “put our team out of business” by making exstrophy surgery for Ahmedabad’s children the same as it is in the U.S.
