Need Something to Do Saturday Night?

An event worth paying attention to:

Yesterday I received a “need a favor” e-mail that I’m pleased to say was well worth more than a cursory glance. Mount Airy is most definitely not our readership, but the event is interesting and, more importantly, open to the public. So I figured, what the heck?

The annual fundraiser is “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?,” a festive evening of food, drink and conversation with some of the region’s most intriguing personalities. It takes place Saturday, Oct. 24. Maybe someone out there has heard of it or attended in the past?

Perusing the website definitely peaked my interest, particularly that 35-person guest list. Here are just some of the names on this very high-profile roster: Joe Banner, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Philadelphia Eagles; Comcast Executive Vice President David L. Cohen; Community College of Philadelphia trustee Rhonda R. Cohen; Dr. Dennis Wint, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Franklin Institute; Tony Lawrence, chef, sommelier, and food and wine educator; David Dye, host of WXPN’s World Café Live; Tamala Edwards, co-anchor of WPVI/6ABC’s morning edition of Action News; Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center; and Laura H. Foster, President and CEO of the Please Touch Museum. Talk about a brain trust ...

(Since "football" is a dirty word right now, dining with Banner might make for some very interesting conversation—or get you kicked off his table.)

For you foodies out there, Stephen Starr Events will present a Spanish-themed meal with dessert—an ice cream bar—courtesy of Ben & Jerry’s in Bala Cynwyd.

I love the concept of this event and think it could be a good model for other types of causes. No sign of the menu on the web, but I imagine that with the Starr empire behind the meal, everything will be over the top—if not in taste, at least in looks.

The event benefits Mount Airy USA, a nonprofit community-development corporation in Northwest Philadelphia, and includes a cocktail reception, plus live and silent auctions.
