Moms Helping Moms (and Dads)

Jessica Cohen left the magazine world to create this website for women with children of a wide age range. It’s designed like an online magazine. Among the countless articles, there’s also a calendar featuring activities for adults not only to do with their children but also to do on their own, such as wine tastings and beer events. Cohen’s favorite place to take her two boys—who are 3 and 7 years old, and love playing sports—is Tyler State Park near Newtown.

Tracey Gilligan, mother of a 7-year-old and a 4-year-old, became a stay-at-home mom in 2008. Tired of searching the Internet and newspapers for cheap ways to have fun with her children, she created this blog, which gives Delaware County families a singular source to find inexpensive activities. Two years since its creation, Gilligan’s blog has been honored with “Best Local Blog for Active Families 2010” by Main Line Today and has grown into a social media resource that includes a Facebook page. The great thing about the Facebook page is “people get to post things they’re passionate about,” Gilligan says.

This resource is another hyper-local site that moms in the community use to find kid-friendly and inexpensive activities via blog posts and a calendar. Information on area events is gathered from readers. Active since June 2008, creators Sarah Freymoyer and Shannon Ott say their website has a loyal following with an average of 300 unique visits per day. They consider themselves a “go-to” website for moms in the Philly suburbs.
