First-Class Frugal

Diane Wulk has Main Line women believing that frugal is the new chic, thanks to her high-end consignment shop, Accent on Design, in Paoli. “Everything in the store is what I call ‘formerly loved’—and I price things to sell,” says Wulk.

Her inventory includes everything from shoes and handbags to jeans and eveningwear by the likes of Tory Burch, Manolo Blahnik, Nicole Miller and Lilly Pulitzer—all at a fraction of the retail price. Think 7 For All Mankind jeans for $48 and Coach flats for $45.

Wulk pays sellers cash upfront for their designer items—or a slightly higher amount in store credit. And it appears to be a popular policy, judging by the two-month waiting list for consigners’ appointments. “The low prices and quality of the merchandise keep customers coming back,” she says.

While a majority of Accent on Design’s shoppers are women, there are a few guys who come seeking gifts. “I sold a full-length mink valued at $20,000 to a man looking for a present for his wife,” says Wulk.

Her asking price: $1,500. Talk about a steal. “No one knows it’s a consigned item when she’s wearing it,” Wulk says. “That’s the beauty of everything we sell.”
