An Interview With Dr. Sandhya Desai: How Integrative Medicine Plays a Role in the Allergy Field
Dr. Sandhya Desai has practiced as a board-certified allergist and clinical immunologist since 2006. She is the director of Allergy & Asthma Specialists, P.C., and the director of the Center for Integrative Medicine.
After a brief introduction to integrative medicine in medical school, Desai wanted to learn more and became certified by the American Board of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the American Board of Pediatrics, and the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine. “I wanted to arm myself with more knowledge,” she says. “I felt my patients deserved a little bit more.”
Although Allergy & Asthma Specialists is a traditional allergy practice, its physicians are very open-minded and believe in a healthy balance of both conventional and integrative medicine, which can be key for patients. “There are so many other paths that lead to illness. A lot of people come to us thinking they have a food allergy, but there is a whole spectrum of food sensitivities. About 25 percent of our patients are coming in for things other than traditional allergies,” says Desai.
Desai began her training with a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry from Case Western Reserve University. She received her medical degree from the University of Michigan and completed her residency in pediatrics at the University of Chicago Children’s Hospital, where she was chief resident. She also completed a fellowship program in adult and pediatric allergy and clinical immunology at Northwestern University.
Desai is an attending physician in the pulmonary and allergy department at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. She is also a clinical assistant professor of pediatrics at Drexel University College of Medicine. She resides in Wayne with her husband and two children.
Dr. Sandhya Desai is a physician with Allergy & Asthma Specialists, a group practice with eight locations in Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs. She sees patients of all ages in the Pottstown, King of Prussia, Jenkintown and Collegeville locations.
