Beyond Borders and Binaries: A Conversation and Workshop

Date/Time

Jun 15, 2019
02:00 PM until 05:00 PM

Description

Beyond Borders and Binaries: A Conversation and Workshop
Saturday, June 15, 2-5p.m.

State violence takes many forms—family separation, criminalization, surveillance, and the control of bodies. How can we build an intersectional analysis that addresses these connections between incarceration, immigrant detention, homophobia, and the global refugee crisis? Hear from panelists about their lived experiences and their work in countering state violence. The talk will be followed by a bookmaking activity led by Friends, Peace, and Sanctuary project in which participants will respond to existing headlines and archival materials to rewrite media narratives. Participants can choose for their books to become part of the Swarthmore College Archives, possibly in the Peace Collection, the largest archive of the peace movement in the United States, or Friends Historical Library.

Presented in partnership with Friends, Peace, and Sanctuary Project, Office of Immigrant Affairs, and Office of LGBTQ Affairs as part of ABOLITION NOW!
