Friends, Peace & Sanctuary at Swarthmore College: McCabe Library

Date/Time

Mar 28, 2019 to Apr 24, 2019
08:00 AM until 08:00 PM

Description

Connecting renowned book artists with individuals who have resettled to Philadelphia from Syria and Iraq, the Friends, Peace, & Sanctuary project has worked to create and share artworks that generate a deeper sense of belonging for immigrants and a deeper sense of empathy here in the United States.

Exhibitions will explore how art that combines scholarly and experiential ways of knowing can build understanding of current issues. Featuring commissioned works by book artists Islam Aly, Maureen Cummins, Erik Ruin, Courtney Bowles and Mark Strandquist, exhibitions bring together historical and contemporary experiences of seeking refuge. These commissioned works will be shown alongside works by the project’s Syrian and Iraqi collaborators and archival material from Swarthmore’s Friends Historical Library and Peace Collections.

Friends, Peace & Sanctuary is a collaboration between Swarthmore College Libraries and the Lang Center for Civic and Social Responsibility. Major support for Friends, Peace, and Sanctuary has been provided by The Pew Center for Arts and Heritage, with additional support from Swarthmore’s Cooper Series, Swarthmore College Libraries, the Lang Center for Civic and Social Responsibility, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Learn more about the project at fps.swarthmore.edu.
