Description

In conjunction with our Clever Criminals and Daring Detectives exhibition, the Rosenbach warmly welcomes Michael Sims, author of Arthur and Sherlock: Conan Doyle and the Creation of Holmes. In a discussion moderated by Edward G. Pettit, Sims will explore how a young medical student in Edinburgh became the father of the modern mystery. Sims traces the creation of the iconic character of Sherlock Holmes to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s eclectic experiences in medical practice and education, as well as to the literary traditions established by Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Dickens.

Michael Sims is an author and editor based in Pennsylvania. His non-fiction books include The Adventures of Henry Thoreau, The Story of Charlotte’s Web, and Adam’s Navel, and he edits the Connoisseur’s Collection anthology series, which includes Dracula’s Guest, The Dead Witness, The Phantom Coach, and the forthcoming Frankenstein Dreams. His writing has appeared in the New Statesman, the New York Times, and the Washington Post, and he has made appearances on NPR and BBC among other networks.
