The Rise and Fall of Earth2 and The Rainbow Crow
Planet B is the latest play devised by the high school Shadow Company of Yes! And… Collaborative Arts. Since they broke out on the FringeArts scene in 2010 with their groundbreaking flash-mob-inspired love letter to the city (titled Flash!) Shadow Company has been bringing their unique theatre making style and voice to the Festival. Planet B is no different.
The teens in Shadow Company started their creative process by asking questions: who are the heroes and the villains of our stories and why? Why do we feel like villains when we are trying to be heroes? Who gets to decide who the good guys are? What if the bad guys are not interested in being bad?
Through workshops, they asked these questions artistically throughout the spring with Philadelphia area tehatre-maker Geo Decas O’Donnell and two different stories emerged. Rather then choose just one, they elected to see where each would lead them. They also doubled down on the degree of difficulty by deciding to use different performing arts styles or genres. The teens commissioned Geo to write a short three act absurdist play about the not so distant future. Meanwhile, a small group began writing a hip-hop narrative about the myth of the Rainbow Crow. These two very different pieces illuminate the same theme and will be woven together to create one piece that voices their feeling of being trapped by identity.
