Sittin' In at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts

Dec 12, 2018
09:00 PM until 11:30 PM

Sittin’ In introduces audiences to new cutting-edge artists. It defies genre, often drawing from everything from straight-ahead jazz to freestyle hip hop and all points in between. There’s an unpredictability to the night, which we enthusiastically embrace! Sometimes you’ll experience a finely tuned set and sometimes you can catch a totally improvised show by seven people who have never played together. The awesome creativity, excitement, and quality always shine through in The Kimmel Center’s informal club-like setting, featuring early warm-up sets by some of the hottest DJs around. And, it’s free!

For over two decades, The Jazz Gallery has been New York City's home for the future of jazz. Many of today's most acclaimed jazz artists—from pianists Jason Moran and Vijay Iyer to saxophonists Miguel Zenon and Melissa Aldana to drummers Dafnis Prieto and Tyshawn Sorey—got their start playing on the Gallery stage. In The Jazz Gallery's Mentorship Series, emerging artists team up with established veterans for a cross-generational exchange of artistry and experience.

For this edition of the Mentorship Series, young pianist Julius Rodriguezwill perform with acclaimed bassist Eric Revis. Perhaps best known for his long association with saxophonist Branford Marsalis, Revis is a top-notch bandleader in his own right. Writing in The New York Times, critic Nate Chinen wrote that Revis's trio "cut its path toward a rare and mystifying cohesion," while Revis's three most recent records—Sing Me Some Cry, In Memory Of Things Yet Seen, and City of Asylum—have all landed on NPR's annual Jazz Critics' Poll. Though Julius Rodriguez is still completing his studies at the Juilliard School, he is already a busy player on the New York scene. Rodriguez has led his own groups at The Jazz Gallery and Jazz at Lincoln Center, and tours with the likes of A$AP Rocky and Jazzmeia Horn.
