The Plays of Chaim Potok: A Staged Reading with Dr. Rene Potok

Dec 5, 2018
07:30 PM until 09:00 PM

Chaim Potok was a beloved, best-selling author of novels, histories, biographies,
young adult fiction, children’s books and plays, including The Chosen, My Name Is Asher Lev, Davita’s Harp and Wanderings: A History of the Jews

Dr. Rena Potok has published poetry, literary translations, and academic essays. She is the editor of Hills of Spices: Poetry from the Bible and the 50th anniversary critical edition of The Chosen by Chaim Potok. She teaches English literature, Irish film, and writing at Villanova University, and is completing her first novel.

The Collected Plays of Chaim Potok is the first collection of the author's plays. The volume is edited by Dr. Potok.  Dr. Potok will talk about the history of the plays and their central themes, and the characters’ encounters with the worlds of modern art, Russian literature, psychoanalytic theory, and Japanese culture. She will also discuss the relevance of the plays to contemporary audiences, and to conversations about the tension between strict, insular religious observance and the secular world of western culture.

The event will feature a staged reading of scenes from the plays.
