Traditions of India at the Penn Museum

Date/Time

Jul 24, 2019
11:00 AM until 12:00 PM

Description

Originating in Hindu temples more than 2,000 years ago, traditional Indian dance combines fluid movement with complex melodies and rhythmic patterns. Adorned with beautiful costumes, jewelry and makeup replicating a temple sculpture, and using ritual hand gestures called mudras, the dancers of Traditions of India present a common language of expression that is both physical and poetic. In this interactive program, students learn about the role dance has in the cultural and spiritual life of India.

Smt. Ramya Ramnarayan is a Bharathanatyam (Indian Classical Dance) performer, teacher and choreographer. She is the Artistic Director of Nrithali Institute of Dance and conducts dance classes in Cranbury, NJ and Allentown, PA. Ramya serves as an adjunct professor in the dance department of Rutgers University. Ramya has choreographed and staged several solo and group dances. She has performed at prestigious venues such as Asian Arts Initiative, Philadelphia Art Museum and Lincoln Center.
