Worth Fighting For

Radnor Township police sergeant and boxer Jamie Campbell

In the ring, professional boxer Jamie Campbell only focuses on what’s in front of him—and winning, of course. No matter what the outcome, his Nov. 13 bout in Aston will be a big win for a lot of kids this Christmas. The Radnor Township police sergeant is donating $500 of his predetermined purse toward the purchase of toys for underprivileged children in the Philadelphia area.

“I’m not rich, but there are plenty of families with a lot less,” says Campbell, who lives in Ridley Park.

A 2005 World Police and Fire Olympics gold medalist, Campbell will donate another portion of his winnings to the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation. The rest will help pay his tuition to St. Joseph’s University, where he’s working on a master’s degree in criminal justice.

“I love the sport of boxing due to its discipline, dedication and training,” he says. “I also believe education is very, very important to be successful.”

Campbell’s decision to assist disadvantaged families this year didn’t come out of the blue. He witnessed an old friend’s struggle to find donations for an annual gift-giving initiative spearheaded by the Ancient Order of Hibernians, a national Catholic Irish-American fraternal organization. His friend of 15 years, Joseph Ahern is a Villanova public safety officer and a part-time Sharon Hill police officer who serves on one of AOH’s Delaware County boards. AOH relies on its members and their friends to recommend
families to receive holiday toy donations.

“You don’t have to be Irish,” Campbell says. “The AOH enjoys doing good things, and it brings everyone together.”
