» Girl power: Kudos to Haverford High School grad Renee Hykel, who will be competing in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games as a member of the United States Rowing Team. Only the top two finishers in the lightweight women’s double sculls earned spots. Hykel and tandem partner Jennifer Goldsack finished second to the Netherlands’ Marit Van Eupen and Kirsten Van Der Kolk, the defending Olympic bronze medalists. Hykel was a four-year oarswoman for Saint Joseph’s University, graduating in 2001. A member of the U.S. National Team, she won a silver medal at the 2005 World Championships.

» Hollywood lights: Parts of Paoli and Villanova will grace the big screen in the film No Boundaries (noboundariesthemovie.com), an upcoming independent feature starring Mark McGraw (yes, Tug’s son), directed by locals Jake Willing and Violet Mendoza, and produced by Radnor’s Violet Pictures. Production and postproduction work is ongoing in the Philadelphia area, and the movie also features locations in South Philly and Upper Darby. Meanwhile, you can check out McGraw in The Sensei, released in June. Elsewhere on the Main Line, a new episode of the Animal Planet series Animal Cops was shot at the Paoli home of Lisa and Buck Buchanan. It focuses on the couple’s recent rescue of a pitbull-shepherd mix. Animal Cops has been taping in the area for the past six months; the new episodes will debut in August or September.
