The American Heart Association hosted its annual Heart Ball gala Feb. 23 at the Philadelphia Downtown Marriott. CBS3 sports anchor Beasley Reece emceed the event. This year’s Heart of Philadelphia award went to William P. Hankowsky, president and chief executive officer of Liberty Property Trust; Dr. Alfred A. Bove, chief of cardiology at Temple University Health System, received the 2008 Edward S. Cooper Award for excellence in medicine. Silent and live auctions raised $110,000 at the event. Notable auction items included a 2008 cherry-red Jeep Liberty equipped with Sirius satellite radio and a GPS system; three nights at Canyon Ranch Resort in Tucson, Ariz.; and a necklace made of cultured freshwater Tahitian and South Sea pearls handpicked by Delaware Valley survivors of cardiovascular disease. The ball raised $1.1 million for the American Heart Association’s research and community programs. —Tara Behan
