The Academy of Music’s 154th Anniversary Concert and Ball, plus other must-dos for January.

On the Ball

Those looking to satisfy a trio of cravings for rock, folk and classical music should look no further than the Academy of Music 154th Anniversary Concert on Jan. 29. Special guests include opera diva Renée Fleming and Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Paul Simon, both performing in tandem with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Fans can expect new orchestrations of Simon’s classics. The Fabulous Philadelphians will offer classical selections, and Lester Holt, weekend anchor for NBC’s Today show and Nightly News, will host the event. For a select group, the fun doesn’t end there. They’ll be heading to the Hyatt at the Bellevue for the Academy Ball, featuring dinner, dancing and more. 7:30 p.m. $185. Broad and Locust streets, Philadelphia. Kid Accessible

Please Touch Museum is spreading disability awareness Jan. 22-April 24 by welcoming the traveling exhibit Access/ABILITY. Kids ages 5-12 get the rare opportunity to step into an interactive safe zone, where they are free to ask questions about physical and learning disabilities. Activities include a wheelchair obstacle course, along with stations for typing in braille and using senses to create art. The lesson: We’re more alike than we are different. Free with general admission. 4231 Avenue of the Republic, Philadelphia. Call (215) 581-3181 or visit pleasetouchmuseum.org. —Shannon Hallamyer

Glass Master

Joining the internationally acclaimed artists currently showing at Craft Forms 2010 is Christopher Ries, whose Glass & Light exhibit runs thru Jan. 22 at the Wayne Art Center. Ries’ works are defined by four dimensions—length, width, height and light—while skewing the borders of physics and beauty. His pieces have found their way into the personal collections of Cindy Crawford, Gov. Ed Rendell and, soon, the lucky art enthusiast who wins the exhibit’s raffle drawing. Free; raffle tickets $10. 413 Maplewood Ave., Wayne. Call (610) 688-3553 or visit craftforms.com. —Emily Riley
