Editor Hobart RowlandIt’s amazing how so many of us—myself included—give breakfast short shrift, whether it’s a hasty bowl of cold cereal, coffee and doughnuts, or one of those crummy cereal bars. Really, breakfast deserves better—and so do we.

After all, it’s the most important meal of the day, restoring our sugar levels after we’ve gone without food for as many as 12 hours. Adults who skip breakfast are less mentally and physically efficient for longer periods during the day, and recent research has shown that doing so over a long period of time may increase heart disease and diabetes risk.

Healthy or not, we all have our breakfast routines during the workweek. “For me, it’s important to take the time to make something nutritious—albeit simple—to get the day going,” says MLT’s dining editor, Beth Ceccarelli. “Breakfast isn’t as fussy as lunch or dinner can be, and that’s what I like about it.”

All the more reason to treat yourself to something special on the weekend—and you should find plenty to your liking in Ceccarelli’s “Best Breakfasts” cover story. “Most people love to go out for breakfast,” says Ceccarelli. “It’s a luxury when you do, but it doesn’t have to be.”

The dishes Ceccarelli chose all have something special to offer. “There are more great options in the area than you may think, whether it’s the utter simplicity of a great cup of coffee or the comfy familiarity of homemade buttermilk pancakes,” she says. “For killer French toast and classic eggs Benedict, certain places just get it so right—and that’s what I wanted to highlight.”
