The scoop: A former private family retreat built in 1929, this resort is set on 1,500 acres bordering the Allegheny National Forest. The Big House is made of California redwood, and there are 12 stand-alone cabins. Seasonal activities and adventures—many complimentary for guests—are available on-site.     

Amenities: Many of the cabins are pet friendly and feature wood-burning fireplaces. Overnight stays include made-to-order breakfast. An on-site fine-dining restaurant serves classic French-inspired dinners and boasts a wine cellar with over 300 selections. The resort’s spa has a range of traditional and innovative treatments and services.

Don’t miss: The complimentary cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating and sledding along 18 miles of maintained trails. For additional fees, try guided snowmobiling, ice fishing or a Jeep tour.
