The Heat Is On

Cool down with a glass of rosé.

And if you’re like the rest of us, keeping cool is the name of the game, especially grill-side. And with all that tasty summer fare filling you up, the last thing you need is another cold beer—or glass of pinot gris, for that matter. So instead of stocking up on Corona, why not treat your guests (and yourself) to a chilly glass of sparkling rosérosado from Spain or rosato from Italy? Light, cool, refreshing and a little bit sweet to keep your energy up, it’s the ideal 90-degree-weather beverage. Traditionally made with red grape varietals—pinot noir, Syrah, Grenache, merlot, Malbec, cabernet sauvignon, Tempranillo, Sangiovese and zinfandel—rosés range from sweet to off-dry to bone-dry. But they have enough acidity to pair well with chilled soups, grilled fish, pork and chicken dishes, crisp salads, and fruity desserts. You might already have your favorite. If not, here are three to look for: Château Routas Rouvière from Provence ($13), Guigal Côtes du Rhône Rose ($13.99) and Château de Trinquevedel ($17.99) from Tavel, France, the only appellation specifically designated for rosé.
