Affectionately known as “the Pig and Whistle,” the beloved P&W might also be called “the little railroad that could,” having survived both the Great Depression and World War II. Through stories, photographs and letters from passengers, the late Ronald Degraw—whose career with SEPTA spanned 26 years—documents the railroad’s history from 1902 (when it was just an idea) to its takeover in 1953 by Red Arrow Lines.
