Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation hosted its third annual Lemon Ball Jan. 17. More than 600 people celebrated at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown on the eve of what would’ve been the 13th birthday of the organization’s namesake, Alex Scott, who captured the nation’s attention with her spirited efforts to help find a cure for childhood cancer by selling lemonade. Former 76ers president Billy King and CBS News’ Tracy Smith emceed the event, and Gail Apfel, Alex Scott’s former principal at Penn Wynne Elementary School, was named Foundation Volunteer of the Year. More than $500,000 was raised for the organization—$100,000 of it through silent and live auctions.
