Brains and beauty abound in the borough of Swarthmore, thick with trees, graceful homes and the cerebral pulsing of Swarthmore College, one of the nation’s premierand most exclusiveliberal arts schools. But where Chester Road temporarily leaves the bucolic scene behind and dives under the overpass, the shops and service businesses that hug the train station on SEPTA’s R3 line range from old school to new wave. Now, that core district, which has grown and been enlivened during the past five years, is primed to expand farther.
