How to Find the Perfect Window Treatments for Your Home

Claudia Clobes Yudis of Urban Loft Window Treatments in Haverford shares her advice.

If lighting is considered jewelry for a room, window treatments are the shoes that pull the entire look together. “Window treatments are an investment, so you really want them to reflect your aesthetic and style for years to come,” says Claudia Clobes Yudis, lead designer and owner of Urban Loft Window Treatments in Haverford. “The most important thing is to incorporate the trends in a timeless way, so your house isn’t looking dated in a few years.”

Styles

“Everyone seemed to want valances in the past, but now everyone wants Roman shades,” says Clobes Yudis.

Roman shades can be solid, textural or natural—like linens and woven woods—or made from fabrics with bold prints. Drapes are another popular choice. “I always recommend going with a modern header like either a Euro pleat or a ripple fold,” Clobes Yudis says.

For either Roman shades or drapery, a look that’s modern, clean and not too fussy is the key.

Fabrics

There’s huge demand for the New Bohemian style, with global and nomadic influences. Neutrals with fuchsia accents, mid-century elements, Ikat prints and muted geometrics are particularly popular. Meanwhile, preppy choices like colorful, large-scale geometrics and toile continue to charm Main Line homeowners.  “Hygge”— the simple Scandinavian concept of cozy living—is also gaining traction, according to Clobes Yudis. Wool and linen fit this trend.

Hardware

Although brass remains the most popular pick for hardware in homes everywhere, Clobes Yudis tells her clients to be brave about mixing metals when appropriate. “The hardware for your window treatments doesn’t have to match the chandelier in the room,” she says. “Mixing adds interest and layering to the space. Everything has a way of going together.”
