Devon’s Black Cat Cafe Review

Owned and operated by PALS, a local animal rescue nonprofit, the French-style eatery serves up delicious breakfast and lunch plates that feel as good as they taste.

With its unassuming exterior and odd location on a largely residential street in Devon, the Black Cat Café is, nonetheless, worth seeking out. The French-style eatery is owned and operated by the nonprofit pet rescue, PALS. Everything goes to the organization, including sales from the restaurant’s gift shop—and that’s reason enough to pop in for breakfast or lunch. We suspect that the excellent food will keep you coming back, too.

Soups and quiche are made fresh daily. I paired a huge cup of hearty chicken noodle with a quiche made of fresh spinach, mushrooms, caramelized onions and Swiss cheese. The crust was tender yet flaky, the oniony sweetness of the velvety filling enhancing but never overwhelming the other ingredients.

Salads come piled high with everything from fresh strawberries and candied pecans to goat cheese and bacon, and any of the homemade dressings is worth the extra calories. Regulars also rave about the sandwiches. It was hard to argue after a recent encounter with a fabulous panini—thick slices of smoked turkey, sharp Irish cheddar, homemade herbed mayonnaise and caramelized onions pressed between two hefty slices of buttery artisan bread.

At the Black Cat, animals in need are the beneficiaries. Meanwhile, diners reap the culinary benefits of some serious people food.
