Abigail Adams

Artistic Director and CEO, People’s Light

If the Main Line has a drama queen, it’s Abigail Adams. Raised in Rose Valley and educated at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Adams has been with People’s Light in Malvern for 38 years.

What was a turning point in your career?

Going to RADA. A week after I turned 18, I got on a plane and went to London. That was in 1975, and it was still the heyday of London theater. But in the four years I was there, it became clear that I wanted to direct and be involved in production. I came back here and joined the gang at People’s Light.

What has been your biggest challenge?

I’m really not fond of showbiz; I don’t like the celebrity part of it. I think People’s Light would be more famous
if I had that interest.

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

Thanks to a grant from the Mellon Foundation, we commissioned six plays specifically related to the history and concerns of this region. We attached particular playwrights to specific communities to build interest and investment with audiences. To be able to do that is, quite literally, a gift.
