Elizabeth Romaine

Director of Communications and Public Relations, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation

Working in radio was her aspiration, and Elizabeth Romaine was close to making it happen. “My dreams were dashed by the iPod,” she says with a laugh.

While in college, Romaine interned at Philadelphia and Harrisburg radio stations. In 2004, she was offered a job as promotions coordinator at Y100. “Five months later, the station switched formats, and everyone got laid off,” she says. “Radio was having a tough time competing with the iPod. It was back to square one.”

In 2005, burgeoning retail chain Five Below hired Romaine as a marketing associate, just as the company was busy opening 20 stores in a single year. Creating Five Below’s philanthropy strategy was another of her many responsibilities, and she partnered with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, also in its infancy.

Over the next decade, Five Below has raised $2 million for ALSF. So impressive was Romaine’s work that ALSF founders Liz and Jay Scott offered her a job.
