On-Air Personality, WMMR’s "Preston & Steve Show," BEN FM’s "Her Story"
Starting her on-air career at NBC10, Kathy Romano never thought she’d end up in radio—or even in Philadelphia, for that matter. But she’s settled into an impressive groove at WMMR, where she’s been a staple on the Preston & Steve Show for 15 years. “We kind of clicked at the beginning,” says Romano of her relationship with her co-hosts. “There was chemistry between all of us.”
Having grown up with brothers and male cousins, Romano is unfazed by Preston Elliot and Steve Morrison. “They can be goofy and child-like, but then I can join in on it,” says Romano, who isn’t afraid to assert herself or offer a bit of levity. “I can also tell them, ‘Enough is enough’—when it’s time to move on.”
It’s an entirely different story on Her Story, the interview show she hosts on BEN FM. Romano took over last year, tweaking the program to suit her personality. “It’s more of an entertainment-style show. I also touch on things like fashion and cooking,” Romano says, while noting that she does tackle difficult issues like sexual assault. “At the beginning, I got nervous. How was I supposed to book a guest every week?”
Now, she has a backlog of potential guests. And when she isn’t on the air, she’s volunteering through her Fresh Smiles Foundation and Kathy’s Cuts (benefiting Wigs for Kids), plus the Philadelphia Police Foundation.
