Malvern Buttery is the Perfect Coffeehouse-Restaurant Hybrid

Friendly baristas and knowledgeable service make this place a great new hangout.

Located on the ground level of downtown Malvern’s spiffy Eastside Flats, Malvern Buttery is the work of husband-and-wife team John and Silenia Rhoads. Loft-like and au courant, with such stylistic touches as rough-hewn communal tables, white subway tiles, large chalkboards and icy mint accents, this unique coffeehouse-restaurant hybrid breaks down any and all of those annoying barriers between the customer and the barista, baker and chef.

Customers can easily browse a centrally located wooden table piled with a premium array of items that change daily. Just load up on whatever catches your eye, and don’t cash out until you’re ready to leave. Knowledgeable servers in denim aprons guide patrons through every part of the experience, while friendly baristas prep their hot cups of Counter Culture coffee or Silk Road tea pretty much right beside them.

On a recent visit, crusty, fresh-baked breads (still warm to the touch), house-made butter, and fresh-fruit jams were offered alongside eclectic and rustic sandwiches smeared with soy-based mayo, roasted fennel, or chicken-liver pâté. Rounding out the weekday lineup: colorful salads made with ancient grains, cherry tomatoes and sweet corn; luscious fava-bean dip with crunchy baguette slices; and croissants and flourless chocolate cake.
