Founded in 1832, Wills Eye Hospital has long enjoyed a reputation as one of the premier ophthalmology hospitals in the world. Wills was the first facility in the United States to be dedicated exclusively to the treatment of eye disorders. It trains more ophthalmology residents and fellows than any other institution in the world. Renowned for excellence in patient care, Wills has been consistently named one of the nation_s best hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. In 2002, Wills opened a new, eight-story facility in Center City Philadelphia across the street from its former location. The new Wills Eye Hospital is one of the most advanced eyecare facilities in the world. It features an ambulatory surgery center, clinics and physician offices, along with a state-of-the-art center for ophthalmic education and research. Wills Eye Hospital has also branched out into the community with a network of same-day surgery centers throughout the Delaware Valley. The Wills Eye Surgical Network offers care that reaches beyond ophthalmology to other surgical specialties. It also provides laser vision correction at its surgery center in downtown Philadelphia and various other locations throughout the Delaware Valley. Community outreach is also an important component of the Wills Eye's mission. A free public eye screening is held annually at the hospital for members of the community.
