The scoop: Pre-Civil War Cape May was a favorite vacation destination for wealthy Southerners. Many structures were destroyed by the fire of 1879, but this one, built in 1863 as the country estate for a Philadelphia industrialist, was spared. The mansion was restored to its former elegance in 1996, and a new south wing was built the following year.

Amenities: Some of the spacious rooms offer 12- to 17-foot-high ceilings and bi-level accommodations. Others have deep soaking tubs. Full breakfast is served. On-site parking is included.

Don’t miss: The Mid-Atlantic Center of the Arts & Humanities’ annual Cape May Food & Wine Festival, running Sept. 9-18. Also in September, Cold Spring Village hosts a Revolutionary War Encampment (Sept. 10-11) and a Civil War Weekend (Sept. 17-18).
