The borough of Media will celebrate members of its LGBTQ community with the inaugural Media Pride Day on June 30 from 1-3 p.m. Hosted by the Media Business Authority and Media Pride Committee, the event will include live speakers, performances and special discounts at stores and restaurants along Plum Street Mall.
Mayor Robert McMahon will kick off the festivities and Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon will also speak at the event.
Throughout the day, local organizations will offer resources and information for the LGBTQ community and regional branches of PFLAG and Free Mom Hugs, both ally organizations that advocate for equality and support members and families of the LGBTQ community, will be at the celebration. Delaware County’s AIDS Care Group, the local chapter of Planned Parenthood and voter registration booths will also be on hand.
Family-friendly Pride activities include children’s storytime performed by Philadelphia-based drag queen Balena Canto, who regularly reads books covering diversity and acceptance; face painting; and live performances by The Media Theatre’s children’s summer campers, as well as Roger Ricker, who will perform the national anthem. It will conclude with a DJ dance party hosted by Philadelphia-based drag queen Fanci DisMount.
Celebrations will continue later in the day at some local businesses, which will host separate events. Painting with a Twist will host a paint and sip event from 3-5 p.m. to benefit Philadelphia’s Attic Youth Center. Diego’s Cantina and Tequila Bar and Sligo will be pouring specialty Pride cocktails. Bittersweet Kitchen will serve $1 cupcakes, with proceeds benefiting GLSEN, a national organization that advocates for LGBTQ students. Other borough favorites like 320 Market Café, Giovanni’s Media Barber Shop, Koffee Korner, local home + gifts and Quotations Bar will also offer special deals in honor of Pride Day.
According to Visit Media's promotions manager, Evelyn Blair, the community's response to the event has been overwhelmingly positive and the town is looking to make the celebration an annual event in the future.
